Strip most of the leaves from the stem so that the water will go straight up the stem to the beautiful flowers. This will ensure that they get as much energy as possible so that your flowers last as long as possible. Next you want to make sure you clip them the appropriate way so that they get the maximum amount of energy. There is always the straight cut from the plant. This is fine, but it will not get you the best outcome. The angular cut is even better as it will give you even more surface area for the stem to absorb more water. But we can do even better than that! After you clip your stems from the plant, take it and squish the end a little bit to get rid of some of the wood at the end. This will allow the water to be sucked right up to the top and your flowers will look amazing for so long! Sara says...don't just pour plain water into your vase. Here are some quick tips to give you the best beautiful return of flowers!
In your watering pail, for every half gallon of water add one teaspoon of sugar, one teaspoon of vinegar or lemon juice, and one quarter teaspoon of bleach. The sugar will feed your flowers. The vinegar will prevent callous formation so the stem will continue to absorb the water. Lastly, the bleach will keep the water from getting cloudy and inhibit the growth of bacteria.
